Tom Cruise Mission Impossible and New York take

On May 3, Tom Cruise was the star again in a day unprecedented. The protagonist of Mission Impossible 3 (M: I: III, Mission Impossible 3, 2006) . Were commissioned to undertake an odyssey through (pun intended) air, land and sea, to make it clear to the public of New York and around the world, that his film was to be released next Friday (May 3).

The news was the opening theme of many news and entertainment programs. What led him to win a lot of coverage and notoriety, although not free, because an event like this is a great advertising investment (Mr. Cruise fees, licenses, insurance, transport hire and a long list of etc.).

Just to illustrate a bit the size of the event, the chronology of events was as follows:

  • 2:30 PM Arrival in helicopter to North Cove and motorcycle output
  • 3-5:00 pm Screening of M: I: III
  • 5:00 PM trip speedboat
  • 5:45 PM Departure sports car to the Apollo
    projection
  • 8:00 PM private train
  • 8:30 PM screening at the Ziegfeld

Today, a week later, the performance of the great advertising investment has paid off (2 million euros estimated only in Spain).

In the Iberian Peninsula, the film opened on 529 cinema screens, which is the biggest launch so far in 2006. But the film only managed in its first weekend just over 2.8 million euros (4,054 screens in U.S. and 47.7 million USD). Any failure when compared with the recent Ice Age 2 (Ice Age: The Meltdown, 2006), with 80 screens less reached the impressive figure of over 5.3 million euros in its first weekend (in the U.S. 3,963 screens and 68 million USD).

All this makes us come back to ask if the fault lies with the aftermath, why Ice Age triumphs?, If piracy is to blame, why Ice Age has made so much money? In short, personal capacity, rather blame it all on the great crisis of ideas that still attacking the film in all genres. The comedy is vulgar, the more violent action, drama, increasingly individualistic and increasingly improbable adventures.
