01/01/2007: The end of UIP

UIP United International Pictures Logo For the general public the importance of this news of little importance, but the fact that the end of the rule of United International Pictures (UIP) will impact the film distribution market with a lot of weight.

UIP was the strategic alliance between two of the major Hollywood majors: Universal Pictures and Paramount. DreamWorks, which once distributed with any other distributor (depending on the co-partner to work) also used to UIP as a vehicle for exploitation in the international market, to eventually be incorporated permanently when it was acquired by Paramount (except DreamWorks Animation) in last year 2006.

Universal Pictures Logo The decision to break up UIP has been given by a strategic decision of the two majors carry out the distribution of its products separately in the medium term. The agreement reached to finalize the partnership has been to divide territories. That is, now UIP Spain, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Russia and Switzerland will be renamed Universal Pictures, while the branches in Australia, Brazil, France, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand and the UK will be operated by Paramount. All this within a period of one year and a half in which these countries also appear Paramount and Universal Pictures, according to the agreement.

UIP has been operating since 1981, founded by Universal, Paramount, MGM and United Artists, to distribute the proceeds of these majors outside the United States, although in 2000, the last two left this strategic alliance.

In short this means that in the cinemas of Spain, and distributed films released after the year 1 January this year and will not in the queue of trailers from the start, that curious animation of the thousands of tiles were the logo of the beginning of this article. But from now we will see the great world with its epic march Universal bombastic.
